1.15.23

Selective Hearing

Luke 10:1-24 and Luke 20:10-8

Dinner Table Questions

How do you determine if something that you have heard about is true? Every one of us makes that very decision multiple times a day. The news article you read. That thing a coworker told you about another coworker. The story your child told you about why their sibling is crying. The words your friend just spoke to you about “being there for you.” How do you determine if they are telling the truth?

Open Bible Questions

Read Luke 10:1-12

– It seems most natural to read this story through the lens of those who are being sent but consider the story from the perspective of those who are living in those towns, going about their business, when a pair of strangers show up…

o Notice 10:8…knowing yourself, and the way that you determine truth from fiction, how would you likely receive these travelling messengers?

o Go back to 10:5…what makes a person receptive (or unreceptive) to this message? What does “peace” have to do with it? What does it mean to be a person who “promotes peace?” (Remember: “peace” here is more than just an absence of conflict. It is the presence of “shalom” where all things are good and whole and just)

o Compare 10:8-9 with 10:10-11. Notice the consistency of the message. The message does not change regardless of the reception of it. Why does that matter?

Read Luke 10:13-16

– As much as we would rather skip over this part, notice the stakes of discerning the truth. It clearly matters what one believes about what is true and false. What response does this evoke in us? What response should it prompt in us? Fear? Urgency? Earnestness?

Read Luke 10:17-23

– Notice 10:17-18. Among other things, these verses remind that there is an enemy. The word “satan” literally means accuser. Leveling accusations is one of our enemy’s weapons. Another is most certainly deception. Jesus calls him the “father of lies.” And he is clever. He rarely tells out and out falsehood. He intertwines it with a believable element of truth. How have you seen this to be true? How do we go about unraveling truth from lie?

– Notice 10:21-23. What insight do these verses give in determining what is true? What is up with the contrast between the learned and children?

Monday Morning Questions

Pray together for the posture of a child in receiving and with thanks to God for revealing truth.
